How to Pack for a Long-Haul Journey

The small decisions that make twenty hours in the air feel effortless — and the arrival even better.

After years of planning journeys to the other side of the world, I've learnt that a good long-haul trip begins long before boarding. It starts with what you choose to carry — and, just as importantly, what you leave behind.

Pack for the cabin first

Build your carry-on around the flight itself: a soft layer for the cabin chill, compression socks, a refillable water bottle, lip balm and moisturiser, an eye mask and your own headphones. Keep medication, a change of clothes and anything you couldn't replace in a single day in your hand luggage.

Choose a colour story

Packing three or four colours that all work together halves what you need. Neutrals with one accent shade let every piece combine, and a single pair of shoes that moves from day to evening saves more room than anything else.

Use packing cubes

Cubes keep a suitcase organised through multiple hotels. I suggest one per category — daywear, evening, sleep and activewear — so you can unpack in minutes and repack without a second thought.

Leave room to bring something home

The best journeys always return with more than they began. Leave a little space, or pack a foldable tote for the trip home.

Plan your arrival, not just your departure

Arrange a private transfer, request early check-in and keep your first afternoon free. A gentle first day sets the tone for everything that follows.
