Where to Honeymoon: Six Romantic Hideaways

From overwater villas to Italian coastlines, the destinations I recommend most for a journey for two.

A honeymoon is the one trip where everything should feel effortless. The right destination depends on the season of your wedding and the kind of couple you are — here are the places I suggest most often.

The Maldives

Overwater villas, private sandbanks and some of the clearest water on earth. The drier months from roughly November to April are the most popular time to visit.

French Polynesia

Bora Bora and Moorea offer dramatic lagoons and true seclusion. It's a longer journey, which makes it a beautiful choice for couples with time to linger.

The Amalfi Coast, Italy

Cliffside hotels, lemon groves and long lunches by the sea. Late spring and early autumn are lovely, with warm days and fewer crowds than mid-summer.

Santorini and the Greek Islands

Whitewashed villages and famous sunsets. Pairing Santorini with a quieter island gives you both the iconic views and a slower pace.

Fiji

Close to home, warm all year and wonderfully relaxed. Fiji's private-island resorts are ideal for couples who want to switch off completely.

Japan

For couples who love culture, food and design — Tokyo's energy, a ryokan with a private onsen and Kyoto in blossom or autumn colour.

Lena's tip

Book as soon as your wedding date is set. The most romantic villas and suites are limited, and the best ones go early.
