White sand, turquoise water and the Great Barrier Reef on your doorstep — Queensland's island paradise, done beautifully.

Some of the world's most beautiful islands are right here at home. The Whitsundays are made up of 74 islands off the Queensland coast, sitting in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef.
When to go
The cooler, drier months from roughly May to October bring calm, clear days that are ideal for sailing and swimming. The warmer months are lush and quieter, with summer storms rolling through.
Where to stay
Island resorts offer seclusion and a true sense of escape, while Airlie Beach on the mainland is the gateway for sailing and day trips. For a special occasion, I often suggest a few nights on an island paired with a private charter.
Unforgettable experiences
Whitehaven Beach and the swirling sands of Hill Inlet.
A scenic flight over Heart Reef.
A private yacht charter with a skipper and chef.
Snorkelling or diving on the outer reef.
Lena's tip
Stinger season generally runs through the warmer months, when lycra suits are recommended for swimming. It's an easy precaution and most tours provide them.
